Man in police chase stops at fast food drive-through

MOUNT CARMEL, Tenn. -- A yearning for breakfast helped end a police chase. Jeffery Lynn Drinnon, 30, was arrested at the drive-through lane of a Hardee's restaurant about 5 a.m. Tuesday after leading police on a low-speed chase.

"He turned into Hardee's, pulls up to the drive-through and rolls the window down like he's going to order a biscuit before he goes to jail," Mount Carmel Assistant Police Chief Mike Campbell said. "They had the car surrounded with guns drawn at the drive-through at Hardee's, and he's wanting breakfast."

Police began chasing Drinnon after a market reported he drove away without paying for $7 of gasoline. Officers said they used blue lights and sirens to try to get Drinnon to pull over, but he kept going until he saw the restaurant.

Drinnon was charged with driving under the influence, driving on a revoked license, evading arrest, resisting arrest and theft under $500.

He was taken into custody before he could place his order.

Thief snatches jewellery surrounded by off-duty police

A thief snatched jewellery in a Utah town, not realising he was surrounded by motorcycle cops having an international convention.

Several off-duty officers washing their bikes heard the street vendor's cries for help and set off in pursuit.

The first to catch him on her motorcycle was Officer Louann Hamblin, from VanBuren Township in Michigan.

She knocked him into a wall, handcuffed him and waited for local police officers to arrive to take him away.

Scores of motorcycle officers were in Ogden for the convention, reports Canada.com.

Man tries to carjack judo team's van

A US man who ended up battered and bruised when he tried to steal a van belonging to a judo team has been jailed for 11 years.

Tyrone Hogan was punched and restrained by members of the Florida International University judo club when he tried to steal their van.

He had tried to steal the van from a gas station in Hollywood after a woman whose car he'd hijacked earlier managed to escape.

Judo team members said 20-year-old Hogan asked one of them for money before reaching into the van to take the keys.

The club's instructor, Nestor Bustillo, said the students punched Hogan, then held him "like a pretzel on the ground" until police arrived.

The judo club's members were in Los Angeles to teach a self defense class. Hogan pleaded guilty to kidnapping, robbery and carjacking charges.

Woman thought she could not be arrested at home

A US woman led police on a high-speed police chase to her house - because she thought she could not be arrested at home.

The woman, of Alexandria, Louisiana, told officers she had seen someone avoid arrest in a similar manner on a TV show, reports The Town Talk newspaper.

But once she pulled into her driveway, officers from four agencies surrounded and arrested her and she now faces charges including speeding, reckless driving, and failure to give way to an emergency vehicle.

The chase began when a police officer noticed the woman's car did not have a licence plate, so he attempted to pull her over but the car sped up and joined a motorway.

By the time the 95mph chase entered Alexandria, officers with the Louisiana State Police, Alexandria Police Department and Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office were involved.

Police chief James Gonzales says the woman pulled into her driveway and got out of her car as if nothing had happened.

Criminal seeks refuge in police station

A criminal being chased by what he thought were rival gangsters took refuge in a Calcutta police station only to find his pursuers were policemen.

Police were hunting for the man in connection with a murder and had already tried raiding his hideouts several times.

An elite squad of officers who specialise in arresting hardcore criminals was sent out after him and managed to trap him in a shop.

Suspecting the men were members of a rival criminal gang, the man ran for his life and took refuge in Calcutta's Taratala police station.

A police officer on duty at the police station told Khabar Akhon TV: "He dashed into the police station and begged our help to save him from a group of men who were chasing him.

"He also said he was an innocent street hawker and he did know why some armed men could be at his heels.

"But we already had his name and photograph as a listed criminal. So, we did not delay to throw him into the police lock-up."

Burglars go back to ask for receipts

Three burglars were arrested in Brazil after they returned to a house and asked for the receipts for the goods they had stolen.

The young thieves told the owners of the house in Belo Horizonte that they were struggling to sell the stereo, TV and mobile phones because they didn't have the original receipts.

A police spokesman told Estado de Sao Paulo: "We have never seen anything so stupid.

"It was obvious that when they rang the bell the owner of the house would call us straight away and they [would all be] arrested.

"They are all underage and I think they were just really naive and thought they would get away with going back."

Bank robber caught after leaving CV at scene

A bank robber has been arrested in Texas after he allegedly wrote a bomb threat on the back of his CV. (For my largely American audience, that's just a fancy term for resumé...)

Police say Frederick McDowell, 32, left the paper behind after he robbed a Wells Fargo Bank branch in Fort Worth.

Sergeant Kevin Morton said McDowell had tried to conceal his CV by taping some black paper over his CV details. He allegedly placed a bag on the bank counter and gave the cashier the note indicating it contained a bomb.

After the cashier placed a few thousand dollars in another bag, the suspect hurried from the bank, carrying both bags.

"Problem is, he forgot to take the note with him," Sgt Morton told the Star-Telegram.

German police hunting "stupid burglar"

Police in Germany are searching for a burglar who they say is the most stupid they have ever come across.

The unknown man broke into the building of a wood sales company in Bremen overnight.
Officers believe he initially broke open a coffee vending machine and destroyed most of it before discovering it took only tokens and there was no money inside.

A police spokesman said: "One might remark that this was written down on a large sign on the front of the machine, but then it was dark."

The burglar then stole a mobile phone, which only works in the grounds of the company, and a cordless screwdriver - but forgot the batteries and charger.

Finally, they say the intruder drank a can of coke that had been standing in one of the offices and was 12 months past its sell-by date.

Police are confident they will find the man soon, saying he should be easy to spot. "He's the one who is stranded with a load of useless junk, looks tired, is sick to his stomach and is probably the laughing stock of all his mates," explained the police spokesman.

Car thief arrested after getting locked in

Florida police say they arrested a would-be thief after he got locked in the car he was trying to steal.

The 51-year-old's target in Gainesville had a security device that locks the doors when the alarm is triggered.

Police say the 1994 Infiniti had a button on the driver's door that would have released the locks, but the suspect didn't use it.

Alachua County sheriff's spokesman Sergeant Keith Faulk said: "Maybe he needs a new line of work. He's not very good at what he's doing now."

Police say they found him locked inside, trying to hide in the back seat. They say he had coins he'd taken from the car in his pockets. They've charged him with burglary and theft.

Thieves caught stealing cash machine empty for two years

A man has been arrested for trying to steal a cash machine which has been out of order for two years.

The ATM in a Chicago restaurant has been empty since it broke down in 2000 and the firm that installed it went bust.

Restaurant staff says the gang of thieves did them a favour, as they were wondering how to get rid of the useless machine.

Three men broke into the restaurant and ripped the machine from bolts sticking it to the floor, only to find it wouldn't fit on the back seat of their car.

Police spotted them drive away with the machine sticking out their hatchback. Officers chased the gang and caught one man.

Tammy Katsenis, a waitress at the L and G Restaurant, told the Chicago Sun-Times: "The thing's been dead for all this time. They went through all that hassle for nothing."

A 32-year-old man has been charged with burglary and possession of a stolen car and burglary tools. The other two suspects remain at large.

Shop thief left his photo behind

A man who allegedly stole £1,100 worth of digital camera equipment from a New York shop left a photograph of himself behind.

James Stissi was arrested after police were flooded with calls identifying him as the man in the photo they'd released to the media.

Officers had struggled to identify the culprit because CCTV pictures from the shop in Long Island were of a poor quality.

However they were able to see a female accomplice with Stissi picking up a digital camera and taking his photo, says the New York Post.

However, she forgot to erase the picture from the camera.

Stissi, 36, has been charged with grand larceny.

Serial burglars think police car is getaway vehicle

Two burglars jumped into an unmarked police car in Florida thinking it was their getaway car.
Officers believe the men are the "Dinner Set" burglars who have been operating in the Collier County area for the last five years.

Police say the men usually target houses left unoccupied when owners go out to dinner. Officers say the men usually get dropped off, pick out a few houses to hit and then have a rendezvous pickup point for a getaway driver.

The men were arrested after jumping into the police car as an officer responded to a call about a burglary, says NBC2.

Sergeant Robert Maxfield, who was driving the car, said: "They thought this was the getaway vehicle and I was in the right place at the right time."

He added: "Before I could even get on the radio the suspects ran toward my vehicle, came up and got in. They sat in and turned and had a realisation they weren't in their pickup vehicle. They were actually in a sheriff's vehicle."

When they realized they were in a patrol car, the duo fled. Maxfield chased them and was able to arrest one. The second man remains on the loose.

Robber undone by craving for a smoke

A robber's cravings for a smoke led to his arrest in Germany.

The man walked into a petrol station in Reinickendorf, Berlin, and threatened the cashier with a knife.

The woman opened the till and gave him the contents, but he wasn't satisfied with the amount and decided to wait for a few more customers to come in.

He wanted to smoke a cigarette while waiting, but found that he didn't have a lighter. The cashier told him she had one in her handbag in the office, the Berliner Zeitung reports. When the robber let her go to get it, she used the opportunity to phone the police.

The man was still smoking the cigarette when police arrived to arrest him.

Armed robbers steal bags of rubbish

A pair of Australian armed robbers made off with two bags of rubbish.

Detectives say the men pointed a sawn-off shotgun at a petrol station attendant in Melbourne and grabbed the bags.

The attendant was carrying them to the bin when a green van reversed towards him.

A man, who had covered his face with a piece of yellow cloth, slid the van's side door open, produced a gun and demanded he hand over the bags.

"He told them it was only rubbish but they took it anyway," police spokeswoman Bronwen Kelly said.

Police say they have no idea why the men grabbed the trash, but they may have thought they contained money.

Police believe the van was stolen and are treating it as a normal armed robbery.

Man arrested after calling police over drug rip-off

A New Orleans man has been arrested after calling police to complain he'd been ripped off trying to trade a microwave oven for crack cocaine.

Joseph Bulot, of Chalmette, was arrested on a charge of possession of drug paraphernalia.

The 32-year-old had showed a sheriff's deputy a crack pipe he said he'd used to smoke what turned out to be fake cocaine.

A sheriff's deputy tested the off-white rock. It showed no traces of cocaine.

Maj. Marcel David, chief of the sheriff's special investigations division, which conducts drug investigations, said he can't recall anyone ever asking a deputy to look at their drug paraphernalia, initiating their own arrest.

Trail of Easter bunnies led police to thieves

Police in Germany caught two burglars by following a trail of chocolate Easter bunnies. The two men, both 19, were feeling hungry after a night of partying.

They decided to break into a local supermarket in Berlin's Reinickendorf district, the Berliner Kurier newspaper reports.

They kicked in a shop window, then took out several handfuls of Easter sweets. An eyewitness called police to the scene of the break-in.

They only had to follow a trail of chocolate bunnies and eggs to the flat the two were hiding in - right next to the shop they had robbed.

Shop robber ends up five pounds worse off

A robber in Scotland ended up five pounds worse off when he tried to raid a shop.
The man asked for a packet of cigarettes and offered a £10 note to get the shopkeeper to open the till.

But, when he produced a hammer and demanded the contents, he got just loose change amounting to about £5. As he fled, he left behind his £10 and the cigarettes, says the Daily Record.

Shopkeeper Joyce McMaster, 55, said the man came into Brown Stores in Ayr. She said: "He asked for cigarettes and handed over a tenner. When I went into the till for his change he produced the hammer.

"He shouted, `Give me the rest of the money' and I froze at first before telling him where to go.
"As he tried to get his hand into the till, I instinctively banged it shut on his fingers. He ran off with a few quid.

"I chased him out the door, but he was away far too fast. In the end, I've had a shock, he's down a few quid and he's not even got his cigarettes."

Motorist threatens to sue police for writing his name

A Missouri motorist stopped by police threatened to sue them under copyright laws if they wrote down his name.

Daniel Smith is said to have told officers his name was copyrighted, and every time it appeared on a document he would launch a £300,000 lawsuit.

The 45-year-old allegedly told police if his claim wasn't paid within 10 days, it would cost them £900,000. He said if they failed to pay at that point, judgments would be entered against all parties involved and their property.

He was pulled over by police officers following an accident near the town of Independence, reports the Examiner.

According to police, Smith also told officers he wouldn't give them his licence unless he was given a receipt. When the officers told him he would get his licence back, he refused and demanded a receipt.

The officers then called for a supervisor. After he arrived, he was added to the list of people being sued.

Smith has reportedly been summonsed for a number of motoring offences.
